When I was about 27 or 28 I used to go visit my grandmother every day for lunch. My grandmother was an avid reader who lived for crossword puzzles. The harder, the better.
One day, while sitting at her kitchen table, enjoying my Stoffer’s frozen meal, I decided to try my hand at one of her puzzles. I came across a stumper so I decided to ask the expert. (I mean, if you don’t have the skills to do something, at least know the right person to ask for help, right?) She walks over, leans in, and while pondering the question an aroma arises.
I asked, “Grandma…did you fart?!” Without looking up, eyes still gazing at the puzzle she says, quite matter-of-factly, “Yeah…”.
That’s it. No explanation, no excuses, just “Yeah”.
As I look back at this, I recall how often I hear that you care less and less about what people think of you the older you get. And apparently it’s true. And how refreshing!
The bigger LIFE lesson? If your gonna stink the place up, accept it! Own it! ALL of it! Go out and make some stink as much as you can. Life is meant to be messy. Smelly. And how liberating and what a relief it is to say, “This is me and what I have to offer! Yes, sometimes it’s smelly, but at least I’m letting it out!”
So don’t let your talents fester. Go out there and stink with pride! It makes life more interesting and you’re more likely to have a laugh or two.
