New Furniture vs. Cat Scratch Fever

Ok, so you finally pulled the trigger on that new sofa or chair. It’s beautiful, comfy, and totally makes your room sparkle like new. Until….

Cat Scratch

Cats. I really love cats. I’ve had them my whole life, along with all the other typical, furry, scaly, hard-shelled, and feathered friends. My Boo is one of my mental support system. But I get it. Cat’s gonna do what cat’s gonna do. Your first thought might turn directly to declawing. You think, “That’s easy and painless. Fluffy will go under for a little while and come out of it with a little nail trim.” Nothing is further from the truth.

The Problem with Declawing

According to The Humane Society, it’s far worse than that and little Trixie is more likely to have behavioral problems to boot. Declawing traditionally involves the amputation of the last bone of each toe. If performed on a human being, it would be like cutting off each finger at the last knuckle. And because the claws are a cats defense mechanism, they are more likely to revert to biting. They are also prone to not using the littler box (because of the pain of using it after surgery) and declawing changes the way their feet meet the ground. So, you know how you feel when you walk around all day in uncomfortable shoes? Imagine that for the rest of your life. Just not a good deterrent.

Natural Remedy to Stop the Clawing

Cats scratch for a few reasons.  Cats scratch to shed the outer layers of their claws, to mark their scent, to get attention, and to stretch and condition the muscles in their paws. It’s an extremely natural habit but you can deter them away from unwanted scratching places.

First, make sure they have an acceptable place to scratch. A scratching post, a piece of unwanted carpet, or even a designated piece of furniture that they can call their own. (I have a cheap ottoman that I picked up at Target)

Second, make sure their claws are trimmed regularly. You can read the proper way to trim kitty’s nails and avoid hitting any major blood vessels here.

Third, play, play, play. Cat’s will try to get your attention by scratching. So run him around.

Fourth, stop them from going for the gold–Meaning your prized pieces of fine sitteries–They keep going where they have already left their scent. So get rid of their smell and make it unpleasant for them to go back.

Empty glass spray bottles. DO NOT USE PLASTIC (buy empty glass spray bottles on Amazon (affiliate link))

(My favorite essential oils)

With these few changes, you can keep Tiger and your sanity. Good luck!

Weekend Re-Design

OB-Mid-Century 2:4
OK, so anyone who knows me, knows that I simply swoooooon over mid-century!!! (I will be doing up a post on getting “Sinatra Styled” very soon)

This is such a great look and modern is not what most people think. Whenever I talk to anyone about a more modern, mid-century style, the first words out of their mouth are “cold” and “un-livable”. Um, excuse me…have you NOT seen all the coziness and livable-ness that is showing up on every blog in every state?

Using the mid-century style in a very cozy and sometimes eclectic way adds a lot of interest and tons of style to any home. Just choose your pieces wisely and you will have one comfortable, swingin’ pad, baby!

A Lesson From Grandma’s Gas

Screen Shot 2016-06-19 at 10.13.09 PM

When I was about 27 or 28 I used to go visit my grandmother every day for lunch. My grandmother was an avid reader who lived for crossword puzzles. The harder, the better.

One day, while sitting at her kitchen table, enjoying my Stoffer’s frozen meal, I decided to try my hand at one of her puzzles. I came across a stumper so I decided to ask the expert. (I mean, if you don’t have the skills to do something, at least know the right person to ask for help, right?) She walks over, leans in, and while pondering the question an aroma arises.

I asked, “Grandma…did you fart?!” Without looking up, eyes still gazing at the puzzle she says, quite matter-of-factly, “Yeah…”.

That’s it. No explanation, no excuses, just “Yeah”.

As I look back at this, I recall how often I hear that you care less and less about what people think of you the older you get. And apparently it’s true. And how refreshing!

The bigger LIFE lesson? If your gonna stink the place up, accept it! Own it! ALL of it! Go out and make some stink as much as you can. Life is meant to be messy. Smelly. And how liberating and what a relief it is to say, “This is me and what I have to offer! Yes, sometimes it’s smelly, but at least I’m letting it out!”

So don’t let your talents fester. Go out there and stink with pride! It makes life more interesting and you’re more likely to have a laugh or two.

Secure Your Mask First…

I came across a personality test today and filled it out—why? Because I felt I needed to inform myself of who I am…(or is it whom?)

Anyway, the funny thing is that after I read the results, I found myself agreeing with every trait it said I had. Does this mean that I ALREADY know who I am??

I find myself getting caught in the thoughts of what I HAVE to contribute to the world and what do I WANT to contribute to the world. –I. want. to. help. people.– (that’s a PERIOD!) It’s really why I do anything I do, I suppose. Hopefully we all do. But really understanding the WHY’s of what we do are so important. What is our intention and is that intention in alignment with our bigger goal of moving through this world?

Yesterday I met with a client at their house. The meeting time was late in the day and I only planned on staying there for an hour or so. We needed to choose some finishes to get to the cabinet guy. 3 1/2 hours later, I walked out their door. Why? Money? No. I did not charge for the extra time of discussing additional scope add-on to their project. I left and thought, “Wow, in 3 /12 hours I could have made over $300.” My husband said, “…You’re too nice!”

Yes, it IS my lively-hood. But at the same time, I love these people. (Love might be a weird word to use for people I only know on a professional level, but…) They are just clients of mine that found me through a website, but I see their lives as wanting to get back to normal and have a beautiful place to come home to.

So how does this relate to the personality test? Well, I want to know how can I best use my abilities, my NATURAL abilities, to help others. Turns out–I already am, naturally.

So as we move through life, let’s help each other with our natural talents and abilities. But, don’t forget to use those natural talents and abilities to help yourself as well.  We all need to live our life in a way that is normal and beautiful too. You deserve that. (I mean, I seriously need to eat, pay rent, and have a fabulous life!)  Then, and only then, can we be free to help others.

Craft to Career – Hello Baked

I was perusing through Design*Sponge the other day, and came across an article on elegant sugar cookies. That’s initially what caught my attention, but the real reason for my curiosity was the fact that Jessica Lee of Hello Baked had found a career in a hobby.

(Read their full interview here)

It always facinates me when someone follows their fun and it turns into a full-fledged business that they enjoy! So, I thought I would share just a taste about this Canada-based entrepreneur.

Jessica Lee of Hello Baked

Jessica took a cake decorating class with a friend, just for fun. She practiced on sugar cookies and the rest is sweetness!

Screen Shot 2016-05-14 at 8.10.48 AM

She knew she was meant for a different path than the one she was on so she took the leap. So from a fun play day to a fun pay day…she followed her gut and found her proper niche in this world! We can all take a lesson from that…and come out sweet.

Hello Baked instagram feed is awesome and colorful!!

My lesson? Don’t look for a passion, just pay attention to what you have the most fun doing! That is where your passion lies…

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a sudden inspiration to go bake cookies! (Click links for Jessica’s recipes for her sugar cookies and royal icing)

Thank you for your interest…

Granier Designs’ website is undergoing a few changes. Please return later to see what we are all about! Thanks again…and have a wonderful day!!!
